Imagine Austin Year 10 Report
The Imagine Austin Year 10 Report provides a high-level summarization of the past decade of the City of Austin’s work toward comprehensive plan implementation. The content is organized by six core principles for action: grow as a compact, connected city; integrate nature into the city; provide paths to prosperity for all; develop as an affordable and healthy community; sustainably manage water, energy, and other environmental resources; think creatively and work together. The report is an opportunity to communicate the stories, successes, and challenges to plan implementation; it should not be considered an update to or refresh of Imagine Austin.
Reaching a ten-year milestone of the City's comprehensive plan is significant and to be celebrated. However, over the last few years, the City of Austin- and the world - have permanently changed because of a series of unprecedented events. While many of the issues that plague us - a global pandemic; systemic racism and police brutality; unaffordable rental prices and continued evictions; fears over emerging infectious diseases; and inflation, just to name a few - continue, we have learned to adapt and refocus our efforts.
At this ten-year mark, we find that the vision of Imagine Austin (adopted 2012) still resonates:
“to be a beacon of sustainability, social equity, and economic opportunity; where diversity and creativity are celebrated; where community needs and values are recognized; where leadership comes from its citizens and where necessities of life are affordable and accessible to all.”
A major strength of the comprehensive plan continues to be its ability to bring people together across subject areas to collaborate, coordinate, and innovate toward holistic solutions. Looking ahead, the greatest challenge the city faces is its fast-paced growth in terms of population size and urbanization. The City is poised to utilize this major strength to adapt to the implications of this challenge including affordability and cost of living, inequitable access to economic opportunities, goods, and services, and urban development pressures on natural resources.
